Introduction to Hydraulic Cylinders Used in Mobile Scissor Lift Platforms: Single-Acting and Double-Acting Hydraulic Cylinders
The hydraulic system is a critical component in the operation of many mobile machines, and scissor lift platforms are no exception. These platforms, commonly used in construction, maintenance, and warehousing, rely heavily on hydraulic cylinders to raise and lower the platform. One of the most important choices in the design and use process is the selection of the hydraulic cylinder. Mobile scissor lifts can utilize two types of hydraulic cylinders: single-acting and double-acting hydraulic cylinders.
Single-acting hydraulic cylinders are designed to apply force in only one direction. These cylinders have only one port for hydraulic fluid, and when pressurized, the fluid pushes the piston out. The piston returns to its original position typically through a spring mechanism and gravity. In other words, the cylinder provides power only during the extension phase, while retraction is a passive process. Due to their simpler design, single-acting cylinders are generally less expensive than double-acting cylinders. They are well-suited for situations where the force required to extend the cylinder is greater than the force required to retract it. For example, in scissor lifts primarily used for lifting platforms, gravity assists in lowering the platform. However, because retraction is not hydraulically controlled, the speed can sometimes be slower. The need for gravity or spring-assisted retraction limits design flexibility.
Double-acting hydraulic cylinders are designed to apply force in both directions: during both piston extension and retraction. These cylinders have two ports-one for pressurizing during piston extension and another for piston retraction. This allows for better control over movement in both directions, enabling more precise operation and the ability to regulate speed and force in both directions.
Double-acting cylinders can push and pull, providing better control over the lift's movement. The dual-port design allows for finer control of both the extension and retraction processes, giving the operator greater flexibility. They are commonly used in scissor lifts, especially in environments where precise control of lifting and lowering, and load stability and speed control are crucial.
